The Opera Fountain, a marble fountain to the right and left of the Vienna State Opera, was erected (1866-1869) by Eduard van der Nüll and August Sicard von Sicardsburg (architecture) and Hanns Gasser (sculpture). The left fountain (Music Fountain) features allegorical figures of Joy, Dance, and Frivolity beneath the crowning allegory of Music, while the right fountain (Lorelei Fountain) features allegorical figures of Sorrow, Love, and Revenge beneath the crowning Lorelei. Both fountains suffered severe damage from bombing during the air raid of March 12, 1945.
