      "Fat Oak" - Airlenbach/Oberzent 🚴‍♂️

The landmark of Airlenbach is the "Fat Oak." It stands on the outskirts of Airlenbach, directly on the road to Beerfelden. Its age is estimated to be 800–1,000 years old.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the oak was still in good condition, reaching a height of approximately 35 meters and a circumference of 8.3 meters. However, the first signs of damage to the tree became increasingly severe, ultimately leading to the tree having to be felled to a stump just under 5 meters high for safety reasons in 2012. Subsequently, the stump was preserved and covered with a protective roof to preserve the memory of a well-known natural monument in the Odenwald.
The tree, which has remained a prominent feature until the recent past, is closely associated with the Nibelungen hero Siegfried of Xanten, who is said to have planted the acorn from which the oak tree grew. According to another story, Siegfried once slew a mighty aurochs at this spot, from whose blood the oak tree grew. In any case, the legendary tree is said to have already existed when the first humans settled here in the Odenwald. 🚴‍♂️

Above the "Fat Oak" is the Airlenbach War Memorial, which commemorates the fallen of both World Wars... 🚴‍♂️
