Down the valley you have a great view over the vineyards and the river. The other side of the road looks very different, nature has taken possession of it again. In an EU-LIFE project, more than three hectares of powdered dry grassland and vineyard breakers were mechanically cleared and kept free of grazing by sheep in subsequent years.

By depriving the areas of nutrients, species-rich calcareous grasslands could be preserved, on which the rare emerald lizards, among other lizards, feel well. In addition to the critters, you should pay attention to the variety of insects. Characteristic of the butterflies is the magnificent scarf, which pulls up the slopes in early summer to find mating partners at the highest points.

On the way you often scare different types of grasshoppers, of which the most striking is probably the Red-winged Wastebird. Because of this diversity of insects and reptiles, the Felsenberg near Schlossböckelheim was designated as a European protected area in the network Natura 2000.
