The Reich Gate is the only surviving one of four original city gates that guarded the street entrances to the city: the Altenburger, Pegauer, Roßmarktsche and the Reich Gate. It was built in 1723 on the foundations of its predecessor according to plans by the Saxon general excise engineer Joh. Christoph Naumann. The Kornhaus (later Malzhaus) with the staircase to the tower had stood directly on the south side of the Reich Gate since 1560. It was demolished in 1882, which resulted in extensive structural changes to the tower and the adjacent gatekeeper's house.
