In the middle of the 16th century, there were only four bridges in Paris, the Petit Pont, Pont Notre-Dame, Pont Saint-Michel and Pont au Change. The construction of another - new - bridge, which was to connect the Louvre with the emerging from the abbey of St. Germain des Prés market towns, became more urgent, since the extensive metropolitan traffic had already caused great damage to the existing bridges, which also were completely built with houses.

Already in 1556 King Henry II had envisaged the construction of a new bridge, but his plan failed for a long time because of the resistance of the Parisian merchants. Only more than twenty years later, on the evening of May 31, 1578, King Henry III. the foundation stone for the fifth bridge in Paris, whose essential feature was that there should be no houses and shops on it. One should therefore transcend them and at the same time be able to see the Seine flowing under it. This had not happened in Paris yet and was met with rejection by the Paris merchants, who mourned the unused salesroom on the bridge.

The bridge, an asymmetric combination of round arches, was designed by Baptiste Androuet du Cerceau. Their spans, which were between 9 and 19 meters, varied in comparison to each other as well as in the upstream and downstream sides of the same arc.

The bridge was finally completed after almost thirty years of construction in the reign of King Henry IV. Even in the just completed two years later Pont Henri IV in Châtellerault and the only 25 years later finished Pont Neuf in Toulouse, no development was allowed despite similar breadth.

When the sun sets over the Seine, it becomes particularly atmospheric in Paris. The many lights of the city are reflected in the water. Above the Seine stands the illuminated Eiffel Tower. Also by boat you can do an evening tour.

The New Bridge is considered the oldest stone bridge in Paris. The construction of the bridge began in 1578 at the impulse of King Henry IV. It is easily recognized by its 12 semicircular arches, the succession of 384 masks and the equestrian statue of Henry IV, which was the first effigy on public roads in France. Located at the end of the Ile de la Cité and built in 2 sections, the bridge connects the right bank of the river, at the height of the Louvre, rue de Rivoli and the Saint-Jacques tower, on the left bank, with the rue Dauphine, the Paris Mint Building and the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighborhood, passing through the Ile de la Cité, which is the starting point of any visit to the Notre-Dame cathedral and the Sainte- Chapelle.

The Seine winds through Paris past the sights. A tour on the Seine should definitely be included.

A stone arch bridge opened in 1607 over 2 arms of the Seine with a bronze equestrian statue of Henry IV. It connects the Îsle de la Cité to both banks of the Seine.

My favorite bridge in Paris. This is also why: The Pont Neuf Wrapped, Paris, 1975–1985 was an environmental artwork from 1985 in which the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude wrapped the Pont Neuf in fabric. Planning for the project began in 1979.

Is the northernmost bridge at the end of the larger Seine island. It was the first bridge that connected both banks of the Seine directly.

Decorated with beautiful black chandeliers and more than 300 carved masks, the Pont Neuf (New Bridge), located at the western end of the Île de la Cité, is one of the city's most beautiful bridges. It is the oldest bridge in Paris. Built between 1587 and 1607, it was the first stone bridge to be built in Paris, as the previous ones were made of wood. The bridge was quite innovative for its time, as it became the first to span the Seine in its entire width, connecting the two banks of the river and the westernmost part of the Île de la Cité. In addition, the first pedestrian sidewalks and small viewing platforms were installed on each of the columns.

The wrapping project for the Pont Neuf in Paris was a passion project for Christo and Jeanne-Claude.
On September 22, 1985, a group of 300 professional workers completed the temporary artwork "Pont Neuf Wrapped." They unfolded 40,876 square meters of a polyamide fabric that looked like silk and was the color of golden sandstone.
