A landmark of our city is the Powder Tower, the former free tower. It is a prominent corner tower in the city fortifications and served as a watchtower to protect the city; from there one had a wide view for enemy observation.

Those who want to visit the tower can visit the opening times:

    Tuesday and Thursday 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.

    Wednesday 9 a.m. - 2 p.m.

    Saturday 2 p.m. - 6 p.m.

in the local history museum Geithain at 034341/44403 heimatmuseum.geithain@googlemail.com

The history of the Geithainer "Powder Tower" The Powder Tower is the remainder of the former Freihof from the 12th century. It was also part of the city wall that surrounded the entire city. The wall, which originally only surrounded the Nikolaikirche, was extended to form the city wall when the place was granted market justice around 1186 and thus obtained city rights.

It dates back to the 12th century, and was a watchtower as part of the city wall. It is the landmark of the city Geithain, and the only surviving tower from the coat of arms.

Under Elector Johann Georg II, Geithain became a garrison town in 1682 and the building next to the tower became a supply magazine until 1897. Cannonballs and powder were probably also stored in the tower. In 1914, the building next to the tower was rebuilt into its present form.
