Relatively long climb to the Rechberg chapel, especially if you already have almost 25km from GD in your legs 😉. The chapel is not to be confused with the ruins!

The Rechberg castle ruins rise above the recreation area Rechberg (now part of Schwäbisch Gmünd). The Rechberg is - next to Hohenstaufen and Stuifen - one of the three Kaiserberge in the Stauferland. It is connected to the Hohenstaufen by the Aasrücke.

The castle ruins are considered to be one of the most beautiful in Swabia. The castle was built in 1194 as the ancestral seat of the Lords of Rechberg. It has defied the centuries and also survived the peasant war unscathed.

Only a lightning strike during a rare winter thunderstorm on Epiphany, January 6, 1865, destroyed the castle. But even the ruins in their current form convey a vivid picture of Staufer castle construction with castle gate, battlement and defense tower. Above the castle ruins, at a height of 707 meters, stands the baroque pilgrimage church to the "Beautiful Maria" with the miraculous image of "Our Lady".

Rechberg has been a place of pilgrimage since the 15th century. The baroque church was built between 1686 and 1688 by the Bregenz master builder Valerian Brenner.
