Initially located in the Atocha roundabout, the Artichoke fountain became very popular among travelers arriving in Madrid by train as it was one of the first monuments to see when leaving the station.
Made of granite and white stone, its construction is part of Ventura Rodríguez's project to beautify the Salón del Prado during the reign of Carlos III. Because it hindered traffic, in 1880 it was ordered to be moved to the Plaza de Honduras del Retiro, attached to the Fuente de los Galápagos or Fuente de Isabel II and next to the Pond.

Quaint fountain in Retiro park. Our Javier has more than done it justice with his description so I won’t bore anyone!
