When visiting Malta you should definitely plan at least one day on the little "sister" Gozo. A visit to the temple complexes of Ġgantija is a must here. A tour of the small accompanying museum prepares the walk through the impressive, in the truest words, stone-old building remains. Both temples each comprised five chambers arranged in the shape of a maple leaf. Access was through triliths, a door structure with two supporting stones standing upright on both sides and a (third) cap stone on top. In addition, there is a great view of the plain with the distinctive dome of St. Johann Baptist from the top of the temple.

The Ġgantija temples are among the oldest, still halfway preserved, freestanding buildings in the world. They were declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1980. In 1992, this status was awarded to five other temples. They form the World Heritage Site Megalithic Temples of Malta and have been included in the National Inventory of Cultural Property of the Maltese Islands.

The visit starts from an Interpretation Centre offering information on the site, audiovisuals and a display of some of the most significant Neolithic artefacts found in Gozo. An outdoor pathway links the Interpretation Centre to the Ġgantija Temples.
