As early as 1231, the imperial princes had been ordered to protect the cities with solid walls. Villages were also surrounded by curtain walls and ditches. The Hochstädter ring wall was therefore probably built in the 13th century. It is said to have been mentioned for the first time in 1333. The wall, which today is more or less completely preserved only on the north side, was about 960 meters long, about 80 centimeters thick and up to four meters high. The wall was supplemented by towers. The low towers are called "Rondell" and were divided by a false ceiling so that defenders could stand above and below and shoot through the loopholes. However, the wall could not have done anything against enemy troops. But it was already possible to ward off robbers and individual cavalry troops. At least Hochstadt was considered safer than Bischofsheim, which only had a thick hedge as a fortification, so that in the 17th century the inhabitants of Bischofsheim sought protection in Hochstadt.
