When the miners of the Stockheim "St. Katharina" mine brought the "black gold" to the surface from a depth of 320 meters for the last time on March 30, 1968, a mining tradition in the Haßlachtal that had last been going on for over 400 years came to an end. The Stockheim-Neuhaus-Reitsch coal mining area finally ceased to exist.
Since 1582, up to 1,000 miners had mined around 120 million hundredweight of coal in almost 20 mines.
The Franconian Forest - once a well-known mining region - was left with a rarity; valuable jobs were lost.
