The history of Musikhuset Esbjerg is as long and winding as the cellar corridors under the beautiful house designed by the Utzon architects

On March 14, 1997, the Esbjerg Musikhuset opened its doors for the first time in the presence of Queen Margrethe, then Prime Minister Poul Nyrup Rasmussen - Esbjerg’s perhaps the most famous city child - and thousands of Esbjerg enthusiastic people.

It was the culmination of a 15-year dream that Esbjerg should have a large and modern music and culture house. It all began in 1982 when a group of local people interested in music met to discuss their common dream of a music house that could boost cultural life in south-west Denmark. Two years later, in 1984, the Friends of Musikhusets Venner was founded and the ideas began to become more concrete.

In 1988, the friends of the music house dared to contact Jørn Utzon - the man behind the Sydney Opera House - and contrary to all expectations, the world-famous architect agreed to design the music house Esbjerg together with his son Jan.

Esbjerg Art Museum - modern and contemporary art

Spending museum for modern and contemporary art, known for functioning as an experimentarium where both adults and children can get surprising experiences.

In museums, artists are often given a free hand to try out different ideas, and traditional views of what an exhibition is are often challenged and rethought. This means that the art is presented in new ways - for example together with music and science.

In the museum's aesthetic laboratory, everyone can experiment with colors, illusions and optical tricks, while the many interactive mediation posts invite personal engagement and deepening.

In Wittgenstein's garden fragrance installation, you have to use your sense of smell to evoke your own personal images, while the open magazines offer pull-out walls filled with images.

Great architecture and a fascinating effect inside, thanks to the architect Utzon.

The Muikhuset and the Art Museum share a common entrance area. Right next door is the water tower from 1897.
