The Marienkirche (St. Mary's Church) in Ziegenhain remained unfinished as a pilgrimage church and was used as Ziegenhain Church by the valley's residents from 1424 onwards. In the 14th century, pilgrimages to the image of the Virgin Mary in the Marienkapelle (St. Mary's Chapel) increased, prompting the burgrave of Kirchberg to begin construction of a larger, dignified church. The high choir was built during the heyday of Gothic architecture. The defensive tower in the west was built at the end of the 15th century. Both the Saxon Civil War and the Reformation led to a decline in interest, and the church began to deteriorate. In the 17th century, the choir was separated from the three-aisled nave, and a makeshift roof was added, so that the people of Ziegenhain once again had a church.
