Impressive church building with an attached monastery

Most pilgrim groups come from the diocese of Limburg and the neighboring dioceses of Trier, Cologne and Mainz.

What no other pilgrimage site in Germany can boast of are the boat processions to Bornhofen. Even in the Middle Ages, a boat procession came every year from Cologne-Maria Lyskirchen. In 1842, the poet Guido Görres wrote the pilgrimage song “Guide through the waves” (No. 147), which is well known far beyond the borders, especially for these boat pilgrimages to Bornhofen.

This also makes the large picture painted by children on the retaining wall of the sports field facing the towpath on the Rhine understandable, which deals with this “wave”, also literally.

Bornhofen Monastery is a Franciscan monastery with St. Mary's pilgrimage church in Kamp-Bornhofen (Bornhofen district) on the Rhine in the Limburg diocese. It lies below the steep slate rock with the hostile brothers Burg Sterrenberg and Burg Liebenstein on the right bank of the Rhine about 20 km south of Koblenz and is one of the oldest and most important pilgrimage sites in the Middle Rhine.
