"Where is there such a thing in the world: A shoe store in the church tower! We know that! It is clearly visible from all directions on the Bahnhofstrasse: the church tower of St. Boniface. On St. Nicholas' Day in 1889 he was completed and the church completed after a total of 17 years. The church building, which was demolished in 1974, had a long architectural history: the foundation stone was laid on May 22, 1873 (the present Kreuzkirche moved on October 5, 1873), and construction was completed a year later. Due to the Kulturkampf Prussia against the Catholic Church, the building, however, only in October 1886 consecrated.

But now came movement into play: In July 1888, the Board of the young congregation made a decision to increase because of the steadily rising church membership numbers of the church (she was until 1899 the only Catholic church in Herne) to Bahnhofstraße and equipped with a bell tower. This extension was already in the original planning of the architect Gerhard August Fischer, who u.a. was responsible for the reconstruction of castle castle in Solingen. As early as December 6, 1889, the scaffolding could be removed from the neo-Gothic tower, and at Christmas 1889 the then three brand-new bronze bells rang for the first time. These were confiscated in 1917 and only replaced in 1924 by three smaller steel bells. This bells were taken from the belfry in November 1954 (they ring today in the Boniface Church in Bönen-Heeren) and brought to today's overall sound by six new bells. Since December 12, 1954, these are ringing on all occasions. In the same year, the striking 3-meter-high statue of Boniface by sculptor Hubert Hartmann was also attached to the tower. It was a jubilee year: the 1200th anniversary of the death of St. Boniface. "

"When it was decided by massive mountain subsidence (which led to structural difficulties since 1890) to demolish the old church and build a new parish church behind the old nave, was also the tower at the disposition.

The city planner Manfred Leyh, under whose leadership Herne was modernized, but held to this landmark: "Please stand at the station underpass and look up the street. Think of the tower. How boring the road would look. "After examination by the competent commission in the Archbishop's Vicariate General in Paderborn, the tower could be saved and still graces the Bahnhofstrasse - a protected monument since 1993. The placement of the tower in a new community-owned medical and commercial building is now unique in the world. "
