Prince Leopold III Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau had the monument erected on the Wörlitz Elbe wall between 1801 and 1807 as a place of remembrance for his ancestors. The ruinous-looking building, made of natural stone, is influenced in its design by Roman tombs. Reliefs with portraits of the rulers of the Principality of Anhalt-Dessau are inserted into the stucco marble-clad walls of the square, vaulted interior. In reference to antiquity, which culminates in the honorary column adorning the building, the monument in the Wörlitz garden demonstrates the aspirations and traditions of the Anhalt family.
