The building at number 112 was constructed in 1916 on the Portuguese-style shopping street Rua de Santa Catarina. In 1921, the Café Elite, designed in the Art Nouveau style, opened here. However, the city's bohemian community of the time considered the name inappropriate, as it did not reflect the intellectual spirit of the times following the proclamation of the Portuguese Republic in 1910. The coffeehouse was subsequently given its current name under the continuing influence of the French Belle Époque.
