The Leopold II avenue curves in a graceful curve around the most famous female statue of Ostend: The Sea. Lying Nude is another name for this lady, but popularly she is invariably called “Dikke Mathille”. Sculptor Georges Grard had a preference for the female nude in his oeuvre. In De Zee he depicted the opulence and sensuality of the sea in a female figure. Until 1963, the work of art embellished the Kursaal.
