The Abbey Bridge is one of the first reinforced concrete bridges in Germany and leads in the Berlin district of Alt-Treptow as a pedestrian crossing to the Insel der Jugend. It was completed in 1916 and replaced a ferry that brought visitors to the Spree Island. The bridge is a listed building.The park and island were expanded and raised in preparation for the Berlin trade fair in 1896. The island, which was initially called "Treptower Bruch", was named Abbey Island after an excursion restaurant designed as a Scottish monastery ruin ("Abbey") opened. Because the Gasthaus Abtei burned down in 1914 and its remains were removed, the Viennese architect and civil engineer Friedrich von Emperger was able to plan a reinforced concrete bridge with a spacious bridge house on behalf of the then city of Neukölln as the owner of the island.For more information see:
