The monument is dedicated to the professional group of railway workers from the former administrative districts of Bromberg, Posen and Danzig, who died as conscript soldiers in World War I and in border battles in 1919. The monument does not represent any military unit, regiment or branch of the military.As early as 1921, the civil servants in the new home town of Frankfurt (Oder) wanted to create a monument for their fallen comrades. It took ten years before the construction of the monument could begin with donations from the railway associations of the Eastern administrative district.The inauguration took place on July 3, 1932. The Fürstenberg brothers created it as stonemasons and sculptors, and the architect was Reichsbahnrat W. Bering. The three steles symbolize the administrative areas of Posen, Bromberg and Danzig, the base the Reichsbahn Directorate East.

The monument is located between houses, probably a former railway workers' settlement, on a hill from which one has a beautiful view of the Gertraudenkirche.
