The village used to be called Hohenbelz or Hohenpolenez.
The name "Bolenze" or "Bolinze" was mentioned for the first time on August 6, 1096 in a document on the occasion of an exchange of goods, in which Arnolt de Bolence appeared as a witness.
The distinction between Hohenpölz and Tiefenpölz only came up in the 12th century.
