The Moervaart, a southern branch of the Durme, was straightened in 1531 and provided with several bridges. Moervaart, Zuidlede (already straightened in 1379) and other waterways in the Moervaart Depression were important, among other things, for the transport of peat and firewood to Ghent. The exploitation of the peat and peat soils was one of the main economic activities in Moerbeke in the Middle Ages.

The Dambrug is a drawbridge over the Moervaart in Moerbeke. The Moervaart connects the Ghent-Terneuzen Canal and the Durme. The canal has little economic significance today and is only used by pleasure craft.
