Liniewegel Nature Trail

The Lokerse nature learning path was first set out in 1997, was refreshed in 2009 and will now be completely renewed in the spring of 2021. It comprises twenty information boards that are placed along a quiet cycling and walking path through the most valuable nature reserves and the nearby rural area of Lokeren.

A long forgotten war...
Flanders became a French province in 1700, as a legacy of the King of Spain. However, this was disputed by the European powers, and the War of Succession began, which ended in 1713. The Line was a defensive line with moats, forts and redoubts, which was constructed by the French in 1701-1702 to defend Flanders against an attack from the Republic of Holland. This defensive line was largely demolished shortly afterwards, but the name Liniewegel is a reminder of this long forgotten war. The wide ditch to this path is also a last remnant of this line. Now you can enjoy how nature has reclaimed the landscape and erased the human traces over the centuries.
