Today it is taken for granted that the availability of high quality water is practically unlimited. This has by no means always been the case. For a long time - especially in arid regions such as the Swabian Alb or in the high places of the Black Forest - a more or less pronounced lack of water was part of everyday life, also in Zavelstein.

They made do with wells and cisterns. However, this was associated with serious problems: with limited water capacity, wells often fell dry after a persistent lack of rain, and water hygiene was poor.

The enormously high child mortality rate well into modern times and the average life expectancy of medieval people, which was limited to 30 years at most, is to a large extent due to diseases that were transmitted through unsanitary water. Touching grave epitaphs in the Zavelsteiner Church bear eloquent testimony to the high child mortality rate.

In 1624, the then lord of the castle, Benjamin Buwinghausen von Wallmerode, provided the castle and town of Zavelstein with fresh spring water, which today still feeds 15 Zavelsteiner fountains.

The Zavelsteiner Fountain Tour with 19 stations over a total length of 2 km shows the history and special features of our water supply. The path begins in the castle, ends at the market square and is accessible in all weathers. It has 19 stations and two thirds of it is a circular route. It is easy to find with the help of orientation maps at each station.

The fountain tour was created in 2009 by the Black Forest Association Zavelstein in cooperation with the city of Bad Teinach - Zavelstein. On the occasion of its anniversary year, Sparkasse Pforzheim - Calw supported the project financially.

Zavelsteiner Fountain Tour, total length approx. 3 km, 19 stations, start in the castle, end on the market square, central information in the old city scales.
