Today, we take it for granted that high-quality water is available in virtually unlimited quantities. This was by no means always the case. For long periods – especially in water-scarce regions like the Swabian Alb or the higher elevations of the Black Forest – a more or less pronounced water shortage was a part of everyday life, including in Zavelstein.

People made do with wells and cisterns. However, this presented serious problems: With limited water capacity, wells often ran dry after prolonged periods without rain, and water hygiene was poor.

The extremely high infant mortality rate well into the modern era and the average life expectancy of medieval people, limited to a maximum of 30 years, can be attributed in large part to diseases transmitted through unsanitary water. The poignant gravestones in the Zavelstein church bear eloquent witness to this high rate of infant mortality.

In 1624, the then lord of the castle, Benjamin Buwinghausen von Wallmerode, ensured the supply of fresh spring water to Zavelstein Castle and the town, water which still feeds 15 Zavelstein fountains today.

The Zavelstein Fountain Trail, with its 19 stations along a total length of 2 km, presents the history and special features of our water supply. The trail begins at the castle, ends at the market square, and is accessible in all weather conditions. It comprises 19 stations and is a circular route for two-thirds of its length. Orientation maps at each station make it easy to find.

The Fountain Trail was created in 2009 by the Zavelstein branch of the Black Forest Association in cooperation with the town of Bad Teinach-Zavelstein. To mark its anniversary year, the Pforzheim-Calw Savings Bank provided financial support for the project.

Zavelstein Fountain Trail, total length approx. 3 km, 19 stations, starting at the castle, ending at the market square, central information point in the old town scales building.
