The Hirschtor on Neustrelitz's Schlossberg has been renovated for some time - but not completely. Now a power struggle seems to be brewing. And this may be at the expense of safety.

Great at the top and bad at the bottom: what in grandmother's day applied to all those people who were tainted by the stigma of having remained somewhere dirty is also true for the listed Hirschtor on the edge of Neustrelitz's Schlossberg. The complex lacks that certain something - the something of a completely renovated building. It is chic and elegant at the top and rottenness reigns below.

The gate will therefore even have something in common with Ludwig van Beethoven's 10th Symphony: it will remain unfinished because the city and the state cannot agree on who will renovate the structures on the ground. You could also call this a power struggle. We remember: The imposing almost 190-year-old building with the antlered figures on the high plinths and the gold-plated tips in the gates was handed back to the public last year after extensive renovation. When it was handed over, the city was apparently surprised to discover that something was missing. The state had left out the ground-level facilities of the Hirschtor during the renovation. There it is still crumbling and rusting like crazy. And if the bent grates on the rain gutters have slipped again, the whole thing is a source of danger.

    Nobody feels responsible

For the state, however, the matter was apparently already settled with the handover of the Hirschtor. It has done its certainly commendable duty, but also represents a clear position: the land around the Hirschtor belongs to the city. Therefore, the decision-makers from Schwerin saw and see themselves as only responsible for the "high-rise structures", such as the plinths and the gates. The rest is part of the city. The city is responsible for replacing the rain gutters and floor slabs. And the Neustrelitz budget would also have to cover the financing. However, no funds for such a project were registered in this year's budget, confirmed town hall spokeswoman Petra Ludewig to the Nordkurier. The town evidently does not see itself as responsible here.

But the state is also sticking to its position. "We are not responsible for the land around the Hirschtor," confirms Christian Hoffmann, press spokesman for the Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania Building and Property Office (BBL). The Neustrelitz residents and their guests will find the tussle over competence difficult to understand. Most people have swallowed the black spots that remained on the plinths even after the renovation - here the BBL had explained that the removal of the spots was not part of the renovation contract. But now people could be harmed. Hirschtor creator Christian Daniel Rauch probably did not want that either. The two deer on the pedestals are looking away from the zoo and towards Lake Zierker. But that doesn't mean that the matter can be overlooked.

The Hirschtor is the historical gateway to the Tiergarten.

The beautiful gate used to belong to the zoo. Today you can go through without paying an entrance fee as the actual zoo only begins further back.
