The Marstall am Schlossgarten in Neustrelitz was built in 1870-72 according to the plans of Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel, who died in 1869, using English Gothic motifs as a stud farm for the Grand Duke.

The Marstall itself housed three riding halls, stables and apartments for the grooms and coachmen. After the November Revolution of 1918/19, the Free State of Mecklenburg-Strelitz redefined the use of the buildings. The State Theater moved into a wing of the complex for its workshops such as the painting room and carpentry shop.

In the period from 1934 to 1944, the leadership school of the University Institute for Physical Exercise in Berlin used the building as a gym. After the Second World War, the Marstall belonged to a site used by the Soviet Army before it was returned to use as a gym around 1957.
