The Cavalier House was built in the area of the former castle courtyard between 1726 and 1731 and was given an upper floor by F. W. Buttel in 1828. Today, the Neustrelitz Road Construction Office is located here.

Not everyone likes the renovated Cavalier House on Neustrelitz's Schlossberg. But there are reasons why the experts decided to color it.

The renovated Cavalier House on Neustrelitz's Schlossberg is currently proving to be an eye-catcher. The vibrant red of the four columns on the so-called central risalit, the building's front section, is a particular topic of conversation. Older Neustrelitz residents, in particular, claim they've never seen such colors there before. They can't, because during the renovation, the experts based their work on the columns' original coloring from almost 200 years ago, says Christian Hoffmann, press spokesperson for the Construction and Real Estate Agency (BBL).

The color chosen is therefore no coincidence. The Cavalier House dates back to the 18th century. It was remodeled between 1832 and 1834 by Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel, a student of Schinkel. During the renovation, the coloring that was present during Buttel's renovations was favored. This color could even be found on the columns, but only after the restorers had worked through seven to eight layers. The color corresponds to the bricks from which the columns are made.

In the Cavalier House itself, numerous photos document the extensive research into the preservation of the building in accordance with its status as a historical monument. The house is not open to the public, however; it is used by the Road Construction Office. Groups of visitors can be accommodated by prior arrangement.
