  • Neustrelitz was commissioned by Grand Duke Adolf Friedrich III. von Mecklenburg Strelitz in 1733 as a late baroque planned city. The baroque city complex is unique in Europe - the eight-pointed street star emanating from the square market. The city plan is based on an ideal Italian city. The construction of a new residential town became necessary because the original Strelitz residence fell victim to a town fire in 1712.

In the 19th century, the cityscape of Neustrelitz was structurally shaped by Schinkel student Friedrich Wilhelm Buttel, who built churches, representative buildings and farm buildings on behalf of the Grand Duke.
According to Buttel's plans, the Chamber Canal was built in 1840-42, the navigable connection to Berlin and Hamburg. A port on Lake Zierker was created. With the opening of rail traffic from Berlin to Stralsund (1877/78) and Rostock (1886), tourism in Neustrelitz boomed. The lakes around the city were already "bath tubs" for Berliners in the 1920s.

  • This is the central market place in Neustrelitz. The streets start in a star shape. It is square. The roundel was added later. In the middle are water features and is a place to stay.

Neustrelitz was created as a baroque residence city around a square market square. From this, eight straight streets lead in a star shape in the main and secondary directions. In 1866 the roundel was created in the middle of the square and a monument to the Grand Duke Georg was built. The monument was dismantled and deposited in 1956. It was not until 1989 that it could be repositioned on Wilhelm-Buttel-Platz. The old location on the market was used for a memorial to the fallen of the Soviet Army, which was removed in May 1995. The market place was redesigned in 2003/2004 and equipped with a fountain.
