Melk Abbey, officially Melk Abbey (Latin Abbatia SS. App. Petri et Pauli apud Melk), is a Benedictine abbey in the state of Lower Austria in the town of Melk on the right bank of the Danube. Today's baroque building was built by Jakob Prandtauer between 1702 and 1746. As a landmark of the Wachau, it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It has been described as “the most emblematic and dominant Baroque building.”[1] It also houses the Melk Stiftsgymnasium, the oldest still existing school in Austria. The abbot of the monastery is Georg Wilfinger (Wikipedia).
