Best Hikes to Eise Eisinga Planetarium

Tips

  • Behind the simple facade of the house lies the largest mechanical planetarium in the world and probably also the oldest functioning model of the solar system. Eise Eisinga built it in his living room in 1774 over the course of seven years. The reason was a mass panic in the Netherlands; People feared that a planetary constellation that year, in which the planets lined up one after the other, could lead to a catastrophic cosmic collision. Eise Eisinga wanted to show with his model that the constellation is rare, but certainly normal.
If you would like to visit the planetarium, you should book an appointment online in advance. Unfortunately it didn't work out during our visit to Frankeker.

  • View from one of the many benches. It's worth pausing here and there

  • A planetarium is a device that shows the starry sky. Originally, a planetarium was a mechanical scale model of the solar system, i.e. the planets. In 1924, the first planetarium was created that used light projection and was able to show the entire starry sky.
