Location: Franekeradeel, Friesland, Netherlands
“Franeker” originally consisted of two places, “Froonacker and Godacker”. The city received city rights in 1471 and since 1585 it has been listed as the second oldest university city in the Netherlands. In 1811 the university, where the well-known philosopher and natural scientist "Descartes" also taught, was temporarily closed by "Napoleon". Unfortunately, you can't tell from the canal how beautiful the place is. The magnificent professors' houses, the churches and the market square are worth seeing. The mechanism from 1774 can be admired in the planetarium, which impressively shows how the planets moved around the sun according to the ideas of the time.
