Römhild is probably the oldest place in what is now the state of Thuringia. It was probably first mentioned in 150 AD by the Greek mathematician and philosopher Claudius Ptolemy as the Celtic Oppidum Bikourgion.[2] The region around Römhild had been permanently settled by people since around 2500 BC. Celtic influences can be seen there since around the 5th century BC. Remains of an oppidum of around 68 hectares can be found on the nearby Steinsburg.
