Römhild is probably the oldest place in what is now the state of Thuringia. It was probably first mentioned in 150 AD by the Greek mathematician and philosopher Claudius Ptolemy as the Celtic Oppidum Bikourgion.[2] The region around Römhild had been permanently settled by people since around 2500 BC. Celtic influences can be seen there since around the 5th century BC. Remains of an oppidum of around 68 hectares can be found on the nearby Steinsburg.

Römhild is protected by the Gleichberge mountains in the Grabfeld region in Henneberg, directly on the state border with Bavaria. The Celtic adventure trail also leads through the Grabfeld past the town.

Römhild is mostly located in the Milz catchment area, the upper part of the Franconian Saale catchment area, and thus in the catchment area of the Main and the Rhine. Only the town of Zeilfeld is located on the main watershed and thus partly in the Werra catchment area.
