    1. The town of Römhild received market rights from the emperor in 1498, and lively trading activity can be traced back even earlier. The town offered 3 areas for annual and weekly markets, namely the market square, the pottery market and the livestock market. The number of markets held in the 18th century was considerable. In addition to the weekly markets, 8 annual markets and 4 livestock markets took place each year. Since 1842, Römhild has had 2 wool markets in addition to the 13 livestock markets. At the sheep markets, which have been held since 1840, up to 3,000 animals were sometimes on offer. The chapter and church fair market was primarily the pottery market. This seems to be one of the oldest, and can be traced back to 1450. Younger, however, is the “COLD MARKET”, which was first held in 1800. Designated as a flea and pigeon market, this one in particular has preserved its tradition to the present day, despite the cold season.

      2.The “COLD MARKET” attracts thousands of visitors and 200 traders every year. In addition to toys, special handicrafts, rope goods, basketry, porcelain, textiles and products from pottery workshops, visitors will find a wide selection of all kinds of pigeons, rabbits and poultry. The exhibition of the “Rassekaninchen” association is also very popular every year. While the breeders expertly check the quality of the animals on offer and agree on a purchase or exchange, the traders offer their goods, including “old junk” from grandma’s time. There is plenty to take care of with Thuringian grilled sausages, onion cake, grilled poultry, stews from the goulash cannon, grog and mulled wine.
