The Evangelical Lutheran town church of our dear women, also called St. Marien, is a three-aisled hall church and a landmark of the town of Meiningen.
The town church is the most important sacred building in Meiningen and fulfills the function of a parish church for the Protestant communities in the region.
Construction of the double-towered St. Mary's Church, which characterizes the cityscape, began in the Ottonian period.
As the oldest building still in existence in the city, it combines several architectural styles as a result of an eventful building history spanning over a thousand years.
The town church forms the center of the historic Meiningen old town and is on the south side of the market.
With its towers and the nave, it towers over the surrounding buildings, which consist of half-timbered houses from the 17th and 18th centuries and classicist town houses from the 19th century.
Close to the north side of the nave is the "Heinrichsbrunnen" with the statue of Emperor Heinrich II.
According to tradition, Heinrich II is said to have initiated the construction of the church after his coronation as king during the homage journey during his stay in Meiningen in early January 1003.

The market square is dominated by the town or Marienkirche "Our dear women" with its two 50 m towers.
In the foundations it hides the oldest building-historical witnesses in the urban area of Meiningen. Components from around the year 1000 were found here. The lower part of the north tower and the door knocker on the left inner door of the main entrance testify to this Romanesque predecessor building. Historiography connects the first building of the church with Emperor Heinrich II. (973-1024), but without being able to conclusively prove his influence. In the 15th century, the growing township required the construction of a larger church, which was started but not completed in the style of French cathedrals. The choir received its vault from 1443 to 1455 with the pictures and coats of arms on the keystones.
In 1544, under the rule of Georg Ernst von Henneberg, the church was reformed into a Protestant town church.
The church was rebuilt over centuries without any design unity being achieved. A major redesign took place in 1884-89. The nave was completely renewed, the south tower moved and architecturally adapted to the north tower (1594), and the colored brick covering was applied.
In autumn 1989 the city church served as a place for the emerging opposition to the political regime of the GDR.
