1899, by Adolf von Hildebrand, in the English Garden. The city's largest memorial complex is dedicated to Johannes Brahms, whose works are among the most frequently performed pieces in the classical concert repertoire. In his late years Brahms stayed in Meiningen several times with his friends George II and his wife Helene von Heldburg. He made music with the court orchestra and conducted concerts on their guest performance tours. The composer premiered his 4th symphony with the court orchestra and created his late chamber music works with clarinet for the Meiningen clarinettist Richard Mühlfeldt. The world's first monument erected for Brahms in Germany was donated by Meininger Musikfreunde.

An illustrious Brahms fan community met for the inauguration of the monument in 1899. the composer Eugen d`Albert and the then most famous violin virtuoso Joseph Joachim belonged.
