On December 6, 1968, the A27 opened as a two-lane highway with two lanes. Due to increasing use, the existing bridge quickly formed a bottleneck, causing traffic jams to increase. For this reason, the spans were replaced at the end of the 1970s by six old spans of the Moerdijk Bridge, which was also replaced. These six parts are pairs of three parts placed next to each other so that wide carriageways could be created for both directions. The Spijkenisse Bridge near Spijkenisse has also been rebuilt with old bridge parts from the Moerdijk Bridge. The Bridge at Keizersveer was reopened on December 1, 1978.
