    Hiking

Many centuries of history in a picturesque natural idyll make this place very special. A bridge leads over the moat and there you can have a wonderful break or picnic in the shade of large trees, where Eifel people have liked to settle almost 900 years ago. In front of the moth there is a table, benches and a board with information about the history of the moth and its elaborate development.

There is a moth in the Urft Valley between Schmidtheim and Blankenheim (forest). This type of castle, which is otherwise found on the Lower Rhine, essentially consists of a heaped up hill surrounded by a moat. The castle hill was usually preceded by a bailey also surrounded by a moat. Nothing is left of the original buildings in the Urft Valley, but an archaeological investigation from 2007 confirmed the origin of the moth for the 12th century.

Compared to the numerous hilltop castles, low-rise castles such as Motte Zehnbachhaus are less common in the Eifel. There is no evidence of a bailey here, but it could have been in the southwest of the complex. In 2007, the LVR office for soil conservation in the Rhineland carried out an archaeological investigation on the hill. The layers of soil and rock debris became visible. This is the excavation from the moat that surrounds the mound. Finds of iron slag show a connection between the plant and the smelting of local iron ores.
