Always a place of trade, a crossroads of goods and people, Porta Ticinese was the real gateway to Milan for those arriving from the south either by road or by water, given its position at the head of the Darsena. In fact, already in ancient times, three arteries branched off from here: the road to the rural towns of Ronchetti, through the village of San Gottardo; the one for Pavia (therefore for Genoa), along the Pavese canal; the one for Vigevano (therefore for Alessandria) along the Naviglio Grande.
In the center of Piazzale XXIV Maggio, at the mouth of Corso di Porta Ticinese, stands today the neoclassical Porta del Cagnola (1801-1814) with the annexed toll booths.
