The Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, whose full name is minor Roman basilica collegiate abbey provost of Sant'Ambrogio, is one of the most fascinating in Milan.
Second in importance to the Milan Cathedral, it was built in the 4th century by Bishop Ambrogio, whose remains are kept in the crypt of the Basilica.
Inside the religious structure some of the most important works of the Milanese artistic panorama are preserved, such as the Sarcophagus of Stilicone, the Sacellum of San Vittore in Ciel d'Oro, the Golden Altar, the ciborium from the Ottonian era and some works by Bergognone, Luini and Tiepolo.

The church of Sant'Ambrogio in Milan in northern Italy was built from 378 by its current namesake, the church father Ambrosius, but in its present form it largely dates from the Romanesque reconstruction between 1088 and the end of the 12th century.
