In the 15th or 16th century, the westernmost of the Linz city gates, made of basalt and slate, was rebuilt as a successor to the gate originally built with the rest of the city fortifications between 1320 and 1329. It was later rebuilt several times.

In contrast to the rest of the city fortifications, most of which were demolished in 1861, the gate at Burgplatz 1 is still preserved. It is protected as a cultural monument.[1][2
