Bike Touring Highlight (Segment)
The hiking and biking trail along the increasingly renaturalized Emscher is a real gem in the midst of the Ruhr metropolis and the surrounding cities. Running mostly parallel to the Emscher, there is now a 100-kilometer-long trail that takes you from the Emscher spring in Holzwickede to the Emscher estuary in the Rhine near Dinslaken.
It is particularly interesting that the Emscherweg allows you an unadorned and fascinatingly varied view of the "backyards" of the Ruhr area. About sewers, through motorway underpasses, in the middle of districts, past sewage treatment plants, residential areas, flood reservoirs rather nature reserves look like a technical facility, typical ruhrgarden allotments and scenic passages you experience impressions of the Ruhr Valley as you hardly get from elsewhere. Structural changes, changes in the landscape, changes in the city are mixed with numerous sights of the Route of Industrial Heritage to a journey that can always amaze you.
You can experience the change directly, depending on the section, not always for your enjoyment. Prepare yourself for bad signage, no signposting of the numerous detours on the blocked sections of the construction work on renaturation that you have to somehow bypass as well as on finished sections where you believe everything has always been there, the cesspool of the Ruhr area would never have existed.
Whether you want to cover the entire route from the source to the mouth of the Rhine, or only want to discover parts of the Emscherweg as a recreational area - you will see the diversity of a metropolis, as well as fascinating landscape.
