Emscher-Auen Flood Retention Basin Castrop-Rauxel

On the border of Castrop-Rauxel and Dortmund, between the Emscher and the Autobahn, there is a very special local recreation area: the "Emscher-Auen". Around an old farm and a huge flood retention basin, there is a new habitat for animals and plants.

Due to the increasing frequency of heavy rain events, the importance of landscape structures that serve water management is increasing. The large dimensions of the Emscher-Auen flood retention basin make it possible to hold 1.1 million cubic meters of water in an emergency. This significantly improves flood protection for the cities of Herne, Gelsenkirchen, Essen, Oberhausen and Dinslaken behind it.
