A bridge over the Ilmenau probably already existed in the 12th century. A document from 1124 mentions the "censum de ponte", the bridge toll that was due to the Rastede monastery. The bridge itself is first mentioned in 1288.

The last wooden bridge was built in 1891. It was dismantled in 1964 due to dilapidation and replaced with a modern construction. The old bridge was given to the Hagen open-air museum in Westphalia.

When the new bridge was being built, support posts from the earlier bridges were found close together in the river bed.
