What a perfect place for a chapel! 300 steps lead up to this wonderful vantage point high above the village of Ebensee am Traunsee. Sit down and just enjoy!

A multi-storey staircase leads to almost 400 stone steps, past 6 Way of the Cross chapels, to the baroque mountain church with its typical bell tower, which towers over Ebensee like an imposing natural pulpit and was built on a steep spur of the Wimmersberg. A wooden chapel was originally built in 1690 on the site of today's "Berghaus". However, the harsh climate affected the timber construction to such an extent that a few decades later a new building in a less exposed location was considered. In 1779 the new Calvary Church was opened with a service. The foundations of the abandoned chapel were used to build the "Berghaus". The residents provided for the supervision of the new church. A porch and a lattice lead to the church interior, which is dominated by a group of three crosses above the altar and two statues, the suffering man in the dungeon and the repentant Peter.

In 1690, a wooden calvary chapel was built in place of today's “Berghaus”. Inside the chapel there was a small holy grave, in front of the chapel 3 wooden crosses were placed. The weather affected the wooden chapel so much that after 80 years a new building was considered. After a long search, the current location was chosen and the chapel was rebuilt.
In 1779 the new church was consecrated with a mass.
In 1785 the church received a small bell, a few years later a second bell and in 1813 a small organ. Over 300 steps lead up to the Kalvarienbergkirche, the wooden steps were replaced by stone steps in 1822. In 1827 the Calvary was made accessible.
