The altar stones are on the eastern slope of the Hengelsberg, in the depression between the mountain and the Hohe Hagen.
Archaeological investigations were carried out on the stone group at different times.
The stones show traces of human processing. This processing is assigned to the Paleolithic.
Next door is a small, somewhat dilapidated Koehler hut.

An interesting collection of stones next to a dilapidated hut. The broken stone exhibits bowl-shaped depressions that were not caused by weathering. Excavations have uncovered quartzite tools. This suggests that Paleolithic people mined and prepared material for stone tools here.
