The city of Touba is located in the west of Senegal in the Diourbel region about 150 km east of Dakar. Touba is the center of the Mourides and was founded by the religious leader Ahmadou Bamba in 1887. After his death, the Great Mosque, completed in 1963, was built at the site of his tomb, which is located in the center of today's city. The Touba Grand Mosque is one of the largest mosques in Sub-Saharan Africa, and its minaret is the city's landmark. The mosque is equipped with four 66 meter high minarets at the corners of the building. A fifth 86,80 meter high complements the building and towers over the large domes. In 2013, Caliph Sidy Mbacke Mukhtar added two more minarets. These minarets can already be seen up to 10 km before Touba.
