"The Wilhelmina Fountain was built in 1898 on the occasion of the coronation of Queen Wilhelmina and was created to commemorate the construction of the water pipeline at the end of the 19th century. The fountain was designed by city architect J. A. Mulock Hower and manufactured by W. G. van Poorten. The ironwork comes from the Devent iron foundry Nering Bögel. The Deventer city maid watches over the well-being of the city here."

Contrary to what the inscription on the pedestal (where Wilhelminafontein can be read) suggests, the monument contains no further references to the queen. The Stedenmaagd of Deventer, made by Wilhelmus Gerhardus van Poorten, stands on the pedestal. It features a laurel leaf and a shield on which the city coat of arms is printed.
