When the first railway line to Lehrte was opened in 1843, a first provisional solution was built. When laying out the track system, a representative terminal station was dispensed with and it was laid out as a through station, making it the first of its kind in a larger German city.
1845 to 1847 the building of the first "Central-Bahnhof" was erected. The architect is not certain, but it is certain that the far-sighted master builder August Heinrich Andreae determined the location.
In terms of urban planning, the railway was a problem with the ever-increasing traffic, as the railway line cut through the city. So in 1873 it was decided to raise the railway line in the city area to a height of 4.50 metres. The old station building was demolished in 1875. The line built between 1875 and 1879 became the model for the Berlin Stadtbahn and similar projects in other cities.
