This "architectural gem of the city" was rebuilt in 1738-1739 under Margrave Friedrich (1735-1763). The predecessor was an Elisabethen chapel built around 1470, which became Protestant in 1528 under George the Pious, was destroyed in the war of 1553 and rebuilt shortly afterwards. In the winding old town, it can be reached in just a few steps from the central car park. The church is striking for its beautiful proportions, 43 m high tower and magnificent portals on the north and south sides. It is a popular place for church music performances, but is otherwise only open for church services on Sundays.
