As the first railway ever on a North Sea island, the horse age began on Spiekeroog on July 9, 1885 with a 1.7 km long rail connection from the center of the village to what was then the men's beach in the west of the island. Since there was a 0.5 km long buffer zone between the men's and women's bathing beaches, the women had to get out beforehand in order to reach their beach via the "women's pad". To return together, we met again in the “Givdbude” restaurant at the terminus, which was destroyed during a storm surge in 1962.
